harm
reduction services center
The
Harm Reduction Services Center provides a safe and welcoming space
where drug users and sex workers can access health care and social
services and take a break from life on the street.
From
Monday through Friday, people
can drop in to get a hot meal, clean clothes or condoms, talk to
a counselor, take an HIV test or get a referral to drug treatment,
medical care, housing, job training and other social services. The
Center provides primary medical care through an on-site medical
clinic and offers legal help through its new on-site legal clinic.
It also offers education, support and activity groups, including:
- Life Management Group: Active substance users meet weekly with
a health professional and a peer to discuss health concerns, accessing
social services, HIV prevention, and other strategies for reducing
the harm associated with substance use.
- Community
Day: Syringe exchange participants and community members gather
weekly at the Center to prepare safer-sex materials and bleach
kits for the syringe exchange sites and street outreach.
- Health
Education Group: This weekly group is open to all consumers
as an HIV/AIDS and general ducation and treatment group.
- Women's
Support Group: This group meets weekly and features speakers
and discussion on women's health, HIV prevention and access to
social services, childcare and employment.
