Prevention Point Philadelphia works to provide safe and human alternatives to the war on drugs. We began in 1991 as a grassroots, volunteer organization conducting syringe exchange when it was still an illegal activity. We have grown into a recognized, multi-service public health organization that continues our commitment to a community-based model that seeks to minimize the adverse consequences of injection drug use and sex work, such as HIV or Hepatitis C infection.

We meet drug users where they are, providing information and access to treatment for people with dignity and respect. We promote harm reduction through syringe exchange, medical care, social services, and referrals to drug treatment. And we understand implicitly the need for nonjudgmental prevention and care services:

  • To minimize the adverse consequences of drug use, such as HIV infection or other health problems.
  • To reduce the risk that users will contract or transmit HIV by providing safer injection and safer sex information.
  • To help injection drug users receive the help, treatment, and services they need—if and when they want them.

That's the point of prevention.

Since HIV is spread primarily through sexual practice or by sharing needles, prevention messages on this site may address these topics. HIV prevention materials funded by the CDC must be approved by local program review panels. However, the materials may be considered controversial by some viewers.
